The Metal Gear NinjaKitty collaboration is over! I put together a nearly endless supply of alternate versions that are ready to be personalized. Those of you with wit or a particular fantasy in mind are free to change the codec dialogue to your liking (note that this is NOT an invitation to edit the image! You may only modify the text). Links to galleries and each specific version are below. Find your favorite combinations, open up a photo editor, and post your ideas for the best dialogue! #MGSNinjaKitty

Preface/Glossary

Before you do anything else, please stop and think about how much work NinjaKitty has gone to in order to make hundreds of incredible projects into a reality. Yes, she does work for commissions, but work of her quality is not always made public for free. I highly encourage anyone who considers themselves a fan to show their appreciation by sharing with others posts, links, or (at the very least) comments about the creations you enjoyed.

The first thing you probably noticed is that there are different scars (where Wolf scratched Snake’s cheek). 1998 refers to the original game, where the scratch is shorter, lower, and more centrally located. 2004 refers to The Twin Snakes version on GameCube, where the scratch is higher and mostly on the side of the face. Please note, though, that currently all codec portraits are based on the 1998 version.

I’m also providing an entire set of versions based on the original Metal Gear Solid color scheme (for lack of a better term). “Game-color” means a filter has been applied to make most colors more green-tinted than normal.

MGS Snake is clean-shaven. MGS2 Snake has facial hair.

H1 : Customization Hints

Obviously, those happy to do without the codec need not do any modification. However, those that would like them combined will need to do some photo editing. There are simply too many combinations for me to create templates for every version (over 5,000!!), so here are some friendly tips to make your customizing experience simpler:

Free programs are available, so Photoshop is not required. GIMP is my recommendation, as MS Paint may not have many options for text.

Download the high-resolution file you want to work with. If you clicked the link to a specific version, then a download button will be in the top right corner of the page . If you are browsing a gallery, then look in the bottom right corner for “more actions” and “view the original image” - this will take you to a better file which has the download button.

Make a new file in your image manipulation program and set the dimensions to 2014 x 3380 for a codec above or below the scene (great for online), or set the dimensions to 4028 x 1962 for a codec left or right of the scene (great for widescreens).

Do NOT delete the signature unless you are attaching the codec to an image that already has the NK signature. If you are using the codec separately, then select the NK signature, cut, paste, and move it to the corner of your preference.

For the text, try using the “Small Fonts” font with a size of 75 pixels, and left justify (for most text, drag your text box from x-coordinate 250 to x-coordinate 1750 on the codec template). This is the closest approximation of the original game that I currently know.

If you’re interested in a resource to search for proverbs, then try http://www.special-dictionary.com/proverbs/

There are 216 versions without using any of the 24 codec templates. If there was only one codec, then there would be at least 4 different ways to place the codec next to the scene. Technically, there are 96 different ways to add a codec template to the scene.

216 x 96 = 20,736 possible versions of a SINGLE codec text!

Since we can make the text anything that we like, the possibilities are almost endless!
